Let's Play Catherine

Introduction

Okay, I'm putting my let's play on this blog because 1) It is a class assignment and 2) I hope to be dealing with the content in a much more academic fashion than many other LPs. This is also my first LP, so bear with me while I acclimate myself stylistically.

Why Catherine?

Catherine is an extremely unique and somewhat controversial game. It is a puzzle platformer/dating sim released by Atlus that deals with very adult themes of sex, gender, and "freedom" in those regards. It also has an interesting approach to narrative where the fourth wall is very directly broken and the player is directly addressed in certain sequences. There is a lot of interesting symbolism that brings up some questions I may not even have answers for, but I'll do my best. Gameplay is also an interesting space to analyze since Vincent is essentially "trapped" in the bar during the day as well as in his nightmares at nights. The gameplay itself even serves metaphorical purposes. I hope to cover all of this and do so in a fairly  academic fashion. So, enjoy!
